Ultra-efficient CHP plant together with recycling of residual materials delivers sustainable heat supply at SCHOELLERSHAMMER

The Energy Supply 2024 project was launched to transform and secure a sustainable energy supply. The investment in a highly efficient CHP plant fired with natural gas and biogas and a residual waste recycling plant to sustainably supply heat to the paper machines is an essential part of our strategy to halve the site’s fossil CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to the reference year of 2020. The new CHP plant, which entered operation in October 2021, achieves an efficiency of more than 97%. In the future, it will be possible to operate the CHP plant with hydrogen and achieve CO₂-neutral paper production. The residual waste utilisation plant, which is due to enter operation in December 2023, will extract thermal value from the waste produced by recycling used paper and from the residual matter produced by waste water treatment.

• Our residual waste utilisation plant is set to replace around 30% of the natural gas we will still need in 2023.
• In total, this innovative energy concept will save more than 60,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ emissions per year compared to our reference year of 2020.
• By closing the recycling loop and utilising the residual materials at the site, we expect to save around 3,000 truck journeys per year.

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Implementation of the energy concept and ongoing energy optimisation of the site have already enabled us to reduce our CO₂ emissions by approximately 41% in 2022 compared to 2020, and we expect to halve fossil CO₂ emissions in 2024.
